Nainital

Tuesday, February 21, 2012

Nainital, the Lake District of India, located in the Himalayan belt amongst the Kumaon hills, is a paradise for nature lovers. A splendid holiday spot with a rich treasure of lakes and hills, Nainital is a destination for the young and the old alike.

Nainital is referred to as the lake of three sages, or the Tri Rishi Sarovar as mentioned in the Manas Khand chapter of the Skanda Purana. As recorded in history, the three sages, Atri, Pulastya, and Pulaha stopped over at Nainital on their pilgrimage, to quench their thirst. Finding no water, they dug a hole and transferred some water into it from the sacred lake of Tibet, Mansarovar. Thus the famous lake of Nainital came into existence. Another legend has it that the left eye or Nain of Lord Shiva’s wife Sati fell in this center and formed an emerald eye shaped lake and thus emerged the city of Nainital.

Recent history records reveal that Nainital was brought into limelight by P. Barron, a British sugar merchant, in 1839. The beauty of Nainital with the central lake cushioned among the forests attracted this person to build a house named Pilgrim’s Cottage and settle in Nainital. Barron gave way to the trend of settling down in Nainital and soon the city became an important administrative town. Nainital is known for its famous landslide of 1880 which leveled out the entire city.

The best getaway from the crowded and busy cities, Nainital is a peaceful zone nestled in the lap of Mother Nature. If you want to get close to Mother Nature and enjoy the lavish picturesque surroundings, Nainital is the place to be. Away from the maddening crowd and pollution of our hometowns, a visit to Nainital proves to be a lovely page out of your dream book.

Introducing Udaipur

Watermarked by whimsy and splendour, the Venice of the East holds stage as one of India’s truly seductive cities. Udaipur is an international destination unto itself, with splendid Lake Pichola lapping against shimmering white buildings, and the Aravalli hills closing in to savour the view.

The centrepiece of the city is the floating Lake Palace – brash enough for a Bond film (parts of Octopussy were filmed here), yet refined enough for his majesty’s pleasure. Packed with princeliness and passion, Udaipur is raw Rajput dreaming, with palaces, havelis and temples at every turn.

Formerly known as Mewar, Udaipur was founded in 1559 when Maharaja Udai Singh II took flight from the final sacking of Chittor by the Mughal emperor Akbar. As Udai Singh and his contemporaries resisted Muslim might, the city grew a reputation for patriotic fervour and an aching love of independence.

In 2006 a record rainfall returned the lake to its natural splendour and restored the heart to Rajasthan’s most romantic city. When the monsoon is poor though, the lake feels more like an abandoned quarry, and the swarming tourist trade of the old city goes into damage control. Don’t despair though, fair traveller; the surrounding countryside is an untapped Rajasthan highlight.

Goan Dance

The state of Goa is rich in culture and heritage, and art - especially performing art in Goa - in a unique feature of the state. Though all these forms fall under the wide classification of dance, drama and music, yet the Dance in Goa has a distinct Goan flavor and can be easily be distinguished from those of the other states. The most significant part about the Dance in Goa is the fact that it colorfully illustrates the unity in diversity of Goan heritage. Moreover, dance in Goa is very ethnic; it is an amalgamation of the Indian aspects with the imported Western one. As a direct result of this fusion, various forms of dances have evolved, depending on the interpretation and expression of the social trends and techniques over the ages. So, different dance forms grew alongside the classical dance style. Each occasion has a separate dance; and each of these dances is distinctly different from the others

The Dekni is essentially performed by Women and is a traditional dance form. The music to which this dance is performed is has ingredients of both the East and the West. So the music is both ethnical and contemporary. The chief folk dances in Goa are the Fugdi and Dhalo and the Kunbi. The Kunbi, however, has elements of tribal dance to it as well. Their dance belongs to the era before the Portuguese conquest. The other unique feature about this dance is the fact that it is devoid of religious content and is mainly social. The Morulem is a folk dance of the rearward communities, and is performed on the Shigmo. The Lamp Dance too is a unique specialty of Goa. Performed chiefly by women during the time of the Shigmo, it is danced by balancing brass lamps with burning wicks on the head. It is popular mainly in southern and central Goa.

The Goff too is a folk dance. It is performed by the Goan Peasants after the harvest as a manifestation of their delight and felicity. The dance is performed during Shigmo with colorful cords, in a technique by which the dancers by dancing create braids and other patterns. The forming of these braids happens during the first half of the dance. The second half of the dance is dedicated to unraveling the patterns made by using an opposite rhythmic movement. The songs that are sung for the dance are all dedicated to Lord Krishna. This dance has an affinity with Gujarati tribal dance forms.

Dance in Goa also comes in the form of plays and dance-dramas. One of these types is the Jagar, which is performed by the Gawdas. Another is the Dhangar. The Dhangar is a Navratri dance. It is a fusion of adoration and dance - in essence, almost like the dance performed by the Sufis. The other prominent ones include Corredinho Dance, Fugdi Dance, Ghode Modni, Goff Dance, Mussal Dance and Romal Dance.

The Dashavatara too is a major genre. Dashavatara directly translates as 'ten incarnations' and is associated with Lord Vishnu. Opinions are divided as the origin of the dance. Some believe it to have evolved from "Yakshagana"; others consider it to have emerged from "Kuchipudi". The subject involves the theft of the "Vedas". It is discussed by the Sutradhar (stage manager), Brahmin figures, women actors representing the rivers, actors playing Lord Brahma (the Creator) and Goddess Saraswati (the goddess of learning), and the demon Shankhasur.

Performed by the Kshatriyas of Chandor, the Mussal Dance is performed as a celebration of Victory. It was first performed to celebrate the victory of Harihar, the Hindu King of Vijaynagar, after he defeated the Cholas in the early 14th century. The dance is so called because it is danced with Mussals (pestles). The dance constitutes 4 couplets while the main dance uses 22 couplets. Though the Kshatriyas finally converted to Christianity, yet they have preserved this cultural heritage. The Mussal dance is now performed on the second day of the carnival.

Performed during the Shigmo, the Romat Dance is a thanks-giving observance. It is performed in a dance-cum-procession style by the people of northern and central Goa. It is an extremely crammed, clamorous and vibrant affair. It is performed with huge banners, ceremonial umbrellas, festooned sticks. The procession proceeds towards a temple or to the house of the landlord to the earsplitting beats of huge drums called Dhols and Tashas.

Udaipur

Udaipur is situated in the south-west of the state of Rajasthan. It is located at the bottom of the Aravali mountain range. History
Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II. Legend says that Udai Singh was hunting one day when he met a holy man meditating on a hill overlooking the Lake Pichhola. The hermit blessed the Maharana and advised him to build a palace on the spot, assuring him it would be well protected.

Maharana followed the advice of the hermit and founded the city. Maharana also built a small shrine, Dhuni Mata, to mark the spot which is now the oldest part of the City Palace. Besides, Udai Singh built an artificial lake named Udai Sagar after himself. Maharana Udai Singh died in 1572 and was succeeded by Maharana Pratap. The closest relevance is given to King Tipu Sultan.

Vishu Festival of Kerala

Like in most parts of India, festivals in Kerala are an integral part of the social and cultural milieu of the state. In Kerala, every community, every religion has something to celebrate about throughout the year and travellers to the state can spend an especially enjoyable vacation if they plan it during festival time.

Vishu is one of the important festivals among the Hindus of Kerala. It is celebrated in the month of April every year, usually on the 14th. According to the traditional Malayalam calendar, Vishu falls on the 1st day of the month of Medam of the New Year. In every household and in the temples of Kerala, traditional rituals are followed to usher in yet another year of health, success and good luck.

Vishu is popular both as a religious and social festival.’Vishu’ in Sanskrit means ‘equal’. The essence of Vishu festival lies in the ritual of ‘kani kaanal’ held in the wee hours of the day. Pictures or idols of gods and goddesses and other paraphernalia are placed on a shelf alongwith special yellow flowers called ‘kani konna’ which are seen to bloom in plenty during the spring season. As per legend, the ‘konna poov’or Indian laburnum is evolved from Lord Krishna’s bracelet.

Strictly speaking, Malayalam new year starts on the first month of Chingam which comes somewhere in August. The significance of Vishu is that it marks the astrological New Year in the Malayalam calendar, and people believe it to be the auspicious day to begin their life anew and start new ventures.

Kani Kaanal

The custom of preparing the decoration referred to as ‘vishu kani’ which is set up, usually in the puja room, has been steadfastly followed for generations by the womenfolk of the house. A wide bottomed circular dish made of bell-metal, the ‘uruli’is used on the occasion, and in it are arranged a ‘thaliyola grantha’or palm-leaf manuscript, ‘ponnu’ or gold ornaments, ‘kodi’or new cloth arranged in a pleated pattern, flowers from the Cassia fistula or Konna tree, some coins in a silver cup, a mirror, a split coconut, a cucumber, ripe mangoes, bananas and a jack-fruit.

The mirror is placed in the centre of the dish while on either side are kept two burning lamps, and a mat is placed in front of the whole decoration. As dawn breaks, the family members are lead blindfolded by the seniormost woman in the household, and made to sit on the mat one by one so that when they open their eyes they are able to view the divine decoration facing them and absorb the yellow aura of sanctity and splendour spread before them. They are also supposed to look into the mirror and see their own faces in it, as a gesture of heralding good fortune. Malayalees consider this ritual as the most auspicious beginning to their activities and ventures all through the year.

Vishu Pulari

Following decoration of the ‘kani’on the eve of ‘vishu pulari’, the lady of the house, usually the grandmother, mother, or the eldest sister, makes it a point to sleep near the ‘kani’, with a match box close at hand. She gets up before sunrise, much earlier than the rest of the members. Keeping her eyes closed, she lights up the lamps and with prayers on her lips, she opens her eyes to behold the golden scene that unfolds before her. The idea behind ‘kani kaanal’ is to ensure a virtuous beginning in life by seeing and imbibing divinity before leading a mundane life.

On the day people visit nearby temples with their families and offer worship early in the morning. People wear ‘kodi pudava’ or new clothes on the occasion and the elders among the family distribute tokens of gift money called ‘vishu kaineettam’ to the younger members, children, maids, etc. Special poojas and prayers are held in public places all over and people wish and greet one another on the joyous occasion.

Vishu Kaineettam

Children wait eagerly for this ritual. The elders of the family starting with the grand parents give away the ‘kaineettam’or gift of money to the younger ones. It consists of coins or rupee notes presented alongwith the ‘konna’ flowers, rice and the goldfrom the ‘uruli’. The gold and the rice are returned to the ‘uruli’ while the sacred flower is to be held against the eyes in reverence. There is also a custompractised since earlier days, ofgiving ‘kaineettam’ to all the people associated with the household which used to be an extended family then, such as servants, field workers, land tenants and other employees. The concept is symbolic of the sharing of wealth, abundance and happiness among all.

Vishu Sadya

The highpoint of celebrating Vishu lies in the partaking of the traditional vegetarian feast or ‘sadya’ that is served on a plantain leaf. A typical Vishu ‘sadya’ consists of boiled rice with a variety of curries and side dishes namely the creamy ‘kaalan’, the bland ‘olan’, the assorted ‘avial’, the brown ‘erisseri’, the sour ‘pulisseri’, the sweet ‘pachadi’, the tasty ‘kichadi’ and the dry ‘thoran’, not to mention the numerous snack and savoury items such as sweet and sour banana chips, crisp jackfruit chips, spicy mango pickles, the pungent ‘puli inji’, the brittle ‘pappadam’ etc that supplement the grand feast. The highlight of the ‘sLinkadya’ is the delicious dessert item, namely the ‘pradhaman’ or ‘payasam’.

Vishu Patakkam

The Vishu day culminates in the bursting of crackers, which has become part and parcel of the festivities especially for children. Firecrackers are bought and stored in the house beforehand. It is generally done in the evening or night under adult supervision.

Weddings are notoriously known to send the bride and groom and their immediate families in a mad rush to make everything just perfect. Honeymoons offer couples a time to know each other better, bask in each other’s love and just marvel at how good life has been to them. For this, a honeymoon in Andaman sounds absolutely perfect.

The Andaman Islands

Located between India and Myanmar which was previously known as Burma, the Andaman Islands are situated in the Indian Ocean in the Bay of Bengal. A lot of these islands belong to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory of India and the others to the north are under Burmese control. Boasting of a rich variety of flora and fauna, Andaman has several unspoiled lush rainforests that the government takes pains to protect. Most of the islands’ terrain is made up of natural vegetation and mangroves on the coast.

The climate of Andaman is typical of tropical islands found within the same latitude. However, as they are surrounded by water, enjoying the sea breeze is always something tourists can look forward to. The best time to visit the Andaman Islands for a honeymoon or holiday is during the north east monsoon when you can be assured of warm, tropical days. There are several islands that you can consider for your Andaman honeymoon. Smith Islands, Jarawa, Neil Island and Little Andaman Island are just a few that you can look into if you decide on spending your honeymoon there.
