Located at the confluence of the three rivers, Mudrapuzha, Kundaly and Nallathanni, and thus giving its name, Munnar is situated in the district of Idukki. Initially established as a plantation town by the British and inhabited by Scottish planters and workers at the tea plantations and coffee estates, Munnar has grown to become one of the most popular hill destinations in southern India, attracting tourists from all over India and from the warm and humid coastal cities of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka during the summer months, in particular. Like all the hill stations, the drive to Munnar from the plains is exciting as well as exhilarating. One has to cross the Periyar River and drive through thick forests, manicured coffee and tea estates. 

You will find some of the world's highest tea estates during the drive from Munnar to Top Station, 36 km away and as the name suggest the highest point in Munnar. More than 12,000 hectares of lush and manicured tea plantations cover Munnar. It was the East India Company who first took the initiative to plant tea in Munnar, acquiring land from the Maharaja of Poonjar. The Tata Group now owns about 75% of the tea estates in Munnar. Today, the hills of Munnar are called the Kannan Devan Hills.

Visit the Tata Tea museum in Munnar and you will get to know about the various stages of tea processing right from plucking, to curing and processing. At the same time visitors can also learn about the different varieties of tea while visiting the room for tea tasting. Anaimudi peak (8841 ft), the highest peak in South India, dominates the horizon of Munnar.

Munnar is synonymous with the famous Neelakurinji flowers (Strobilanthes kunthiana), a blue flower that blooms only once in every 12 years transforming the hills and valleys of Munnar into a blue carpet. The flowers are expected to bloom next in the year 2018.
