Agra is famous worldwide for the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world. But this is not the only monument that the city boasts of. Once the capital of the Mughal Empire, Agra has many other historic monuments which tell us the story of the Mughal Dynasty in India.

Known for its rich culture and tradition, the city has witnessed many ups and downs in the past centuries. The Agra Fort is a silent witness of the rise and fall of the Mughals. Also known as the Red Fort of Agra, the fort was built by Akbar in Red Sandstone when he was through with the consolidation of his power after accession to power. For many years Agra Fort was used by the Mughal Emperors as a military strategic point of the Mughals as well as the royal residence.

The buildings built within the fort architectural marvels and are mixture of different architectural styles. The later generations of the Mughal Dynasty added more palaces inside the fort. Most of the buildings which were added later on, use marble as the chief construction material.

At the end of his life, Shah Jahan, who built the world renowned taj Mahal in memory of his loving wife, Mumtaz mahal, was imprisoned by his son, Aurangzeb, in the fort.

The fort was the site of a battle during the Indian freedom fight of 1857.
